Production
Steven Spielberg directed Steve Zaillian’s adaptation of Thomas Keneally’s 1982 book for Universal on a $22 million budget. The film was shot in black and white over 72 days in Kraków and at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Liam Neeson played Schindler, with Ralph Fiennes as the SS commandant Amon Göth.
Reception
The film opened in December 1993, earned around $322 million worldwide, and won seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, Spielberg’s first directing Oscar.
Legacy
Profits from the film funded the Shoah Foundation, which has since recorded more than 55,000 Holocaust survivor testimonies. The film is widely taught in Holocaust education and remains one of the most-watched dramatizations of the Shoah.
