Background

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Lewis attended the University of Houston and broke onto the international scene at the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki, winning three golds.

Career

At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics he matched Jesse Owens with golds in the 100m, 200m, long jump, and 4x100m relay. He defended his long jump title at three subsequent Olympics, his last at age 35 in Atlanta in 1996.

Style of play

A right-handed long jumper, Lewis combined sprint speed with consistent technique on the runway. He held the world long jump record briefly during a heated rivalry with Mike Powell.
