The hinge joint of the upper limb where the humerus meets the radius and ulna.
Structure
The elbow joint actually has three articulations within a single capsule: the humeroulnar, humeroradial, and proximal radioulnar joints. Strong collateral ligaments support each side.
Function
Flexion and extension occur at the humeroulnar joint, while the proximal radioulnar joint contributes to forearm rotation. The biceps and brachialis flex the elbow, while the triceps extends it.
Clinical note
Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow are common overuse injuries of the tendons around the lateral and medial epicondyles of the humerus.
