Eyebrow

Supercilium

Filter:

A strip of short hair above each eye that shields the eye from sweat and contributes to facial expression.

Structure

Each eyebrow contains 200 to 500 hairs in a typical adult, arranged in a slightly arched line. The hairs grow from follicles set into the skin over the supraorbital ridge.

Function

The arched shape channels sweat and rain to the sides of the face rather than into the eye. The frontalis and corrugator muscles raise and pull the brows together to signal surprise, anger, or concentration.

Clinical note

Loss of the lateral third of the eyebrow can be a clinical sign of hypothyroidism.
