BODY PARTS

Frontal Bone

Os frontale

Filter:

The skull bone that forms the forehead and the roofs of both eye sockets.

Structure

At birth the frontal bone is in two halves joined by the metopic suture; these usually fuse during early childhood. The bone contains the paired frontal sinuses above the eyes.

Function

Beyond protecting the brain, it forms the supraorbital ridges that shape the brow and gives attachment to the frontalis muscle, which raises the eyebrows.

Clinical note

Frontal sinusitis produces forehead pain and tenderness, and severe forehead trauma can fracture the bone and the underlying sinus.
