Pes

Filter:

The flexible base of the lower limb, made up of 26 bones, that supports the body's weight and propels it during walking.

Structure

The foot has three regions: the hindfoot containing the talus and calcaneus, the midfoot with the navicular, cuboid, and cuneiforms, and the forefoot with the metatarsals and toes.

Function

The arches of the foot, supported by ligaments and intrinsic muscles, act as springs that store and release energy with each step. The big toe drives the final push-off.

Clinical note

Flat feet, plantar fasciitis, and stress fractures of the metatarsals are common foot complaints in athletes and people who stand for long hours.
