Lacrimal Sac

Saccus lacrimalis

Filter:

A small pouch at the inner corner of the eye that collects tears before they drain into the nose.

Structure

The sac is the upper expanded end of the nasolacrimal drainage system. Its wall has a thin epithelium overlying connective tissue, and it sits in a bony groove at the side of the nose.

Function

Blinking pumps tears through the canaliculi into the sac, and the sac empties through the nasolacrimal duct into the nose.

Clinical note

Blockage of the duct can cause tears to back up and the lacrimal sac to swell or become infected, a condition called dacryocystitis.
