The lower limb of the body, used for standing, walking, and balance.
Structure
In strict anatomical terms, the leg refers only to the segment between knee and ankle, framed by the tibia and fibula. In everyday use it covers the whole lower limb.
Function
Large muscles of the thigh and buttock generate most of the force used in walking and running, while the calf provides the final push-off.
Clinical note
The lower leg contains compartments wrapped in tough fascia, and severe swelling can produce compartment syndrome that requires emergency release.
