A muscular sac in the pelvis that stores urine until it is voluntarily released through the urethra.
Structure
The wall has three layers of smooth muscle collectively called the detrusor, lined inside by transitional epithelium that can stretch as the bladder fills. The trigone, a triangular region on the floor, marks where the ureters enter and the urethra exits.
Function
As the bladder fills, stretch receptors signal a sense of fullness. Voiding occurs when the detrusor contracts and the urethral sphincters relax under voluntary control.
Clinical note
Urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and overactive bladder are common conditions affecting this organ.
