An American personal computer brand that pioneered IBM-compatible PCs in the 1980s and 1990s, now a brand owned by HP Inc.
Origins
Compaq Computer Corporation was founded in 1982 in Houston, Texas, by Rod Canion, Jim Harris, and Bill Murto, three former Texas Instruments engineers. The first product was the Compaq Portable, one of the earliest IBM PC-compatible portable computers.
Products
Compaq made desktop PCs including the Presario consumer line and ProLiant servers, the Compaq LTE laptops, and Armada professional notebooks. The brand was prominent in the 1990s as a leading worldwide PC vendor.
Operations
Compaq was acquired by Hewlett-Packard in 2002 in a deal valued at about 25 billion dollars. The Compaq name has been used selectively since then for entry-level PC lines in various markets.
