ExxonMobil was formed in 1999 by the merger of Exxon and Mobil, both descendants of John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil, which was broken up by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1911. Exxon had been Standard Oil of New Jersey and Mobil had been Standard Oil of New York.
