Origins
IKEA was founded in 1943 by 17-year-old Ingvar Kamprad in Almhult, Sweden. The name is an acronym from Ingvar Kamprad, Elmtaryd (the farm where he grew up), and Agunnaryd (his hometown). Flat-pack furniture was introduced in 1956.

IKEA sells ready-to-assemble furniture, kitchens, beds, mattresses, lighting, textiles, kitchenware, and small appliances, all under in-house brand names. Most stores include a restaurant serving Swedish meatballs and other dishes.
Operations
IKEA is owned by the Ingka Foundation and the Inter IKEA Foundation. The retail headquarters is in Delft, the Netherlands, with the largest part of the franchise system based in Sweden. The company operates hundreds of stores in many countries.
