Origins
MTV launched on August 1, 1981, in the United States. The first video shown was Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles. The channel was originally a joint venture of Warner Communications and American Express called Warner-Amex Satellite Entertainment.

MTV programming has included music videos, the Video Music Awards, MTV Unplugged, The Real World, Beavis and Butt-Head, Punk’d, Jersey Shore, Cribs, and many other youth-oriented shows, plus international networks across many regions.
Operations
MTV is part of Paramount Global, headquartered in New York City. MTV expanded into international channels in the late 1980s and 1990s and operates regional versions across Europe, Asia, Latin America, and other parts of the world.
