Origins
Olympus was founded in 1919 in Tokyo as Takachiho Seisakusho. The name was inspired by Mount Olympus in Greek mythology. Early products were microscopes, with cameras added in the 1930s.

Olympus today focuses on medical devices, leading the world in gastrointestinal endoscopes and offering surgical energy devices, microscopes, and industrial inspection cameras. The consumer camera business was spun off in 2021 and rebranded as OM System.
