Origins
QQ was launched by Tencent in February 1999 under the name OICQ, modeled on the ICQ messenger. After legal pressure from AOL, which owned ICQ, the name was changed to QQ. The penguin mascot Pony became one of the best-known mascots in Chinese internet.
Products
QQ offers desktop and mobile instant messaging, voice and video calls, the QQ Mail service, QQ Music streaming, QQ Games, and the Qzone social networking and blogging service.
Operations
QQ is operated by Tencent, headquartered in Shenzhen, China. While Tencent’s newer messaging app WeChat now dominates mobile messaging in China, QQ retains a large user base, particularly among younger users and gamers.
