James Cameron wrote and directed for 20th Century Fox on a budget around $237 million. The film deployed a new performance-capture system feeding facial expressions into a virtual camera. Weta Digital and Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment co-developed the technology.
Reception
The film opened in December 2009 and earned around $2.92 billion worldwide on initial release, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time and holding the title across several reissues.
Legacy
Avatar spurred a brief boom in 3D theatrical exhibition and the broader adoption of higher-frame-rate projection. A long-delayed sequel, The Way of Water, opened in 2022.
