Back to the Future

Filter:

A 1985 American science fiction comedy about a teenager accidentally transported from 1985 to 1955 in his eccentric friend's DeLorean time machine.

Production

Robert Zemeckis directed from a script he co-wrote with Bob Gale, after the project bounced between studios for years. Michael J. Fox stepped in for original lead Eric Stoltz five weeks into shooting, with Christopher Lloyd as the inventor Doc Brown. Universal released the film at a $19 million budget.

Reception

The film opened in July 1985, earned around $389 million worldwide, and was the highest-grossing film of the year. Critical reception was strong and reviews of the time and the home-video era only sharpened that response.

Legacy

The film spawned two sequels, a Universal Studios ride, and a 2020 musical. The DeLorean DMC-12, a commercial failure as a car, became one of the most recognizable vehicles in cinema.
