Production
Steven Spielberg directed from a Melissa Mathison screenplay developed from his own childhood memories. The alien puppet was created by Carlo Rambaldi for around $1.5 million. Universal released the film with a $10.5 million production budget.
Reception
The film opened in June 1982 and earned around $792 million worldwide on its original release, holding the all-time box office record until Jurassic Park in 1993. It won four Academy Awards from nine nominations.
Legacy
The flying-bicycle silhouette across the moon became the logo of Spielberg’s production company Amblin Entertainment. Reese’s Pieces sales jumped 65 percent after the film, demonstrating the power of cinematic product placement.
