Production

Christopher Nolan directed from a script co-written with his brother Jonathan, produced by Paramount and Warner Bros. on a $165 million budget. Physicist Kip Thorne served as scientific consultant and produced detailed simulations of the black hole rendered as the visual reference for the film’s Gargantua.

Reception

The film opened in November 2014, earned around $702 million worldwide, and received five Academy Award nominations. It won for visual effects.

Legacy

The Gargantua imagery contributed to a peer-reviewed astronomy paper and shaped public visualization of black holes in advance of the 2019 Event Horizon Telescope image. The film is a regular reference point in discussions of theatrical IMAX exhibition.
