A 2016 American musical romantic comedy-drama written and directed by Damien Chazelle about an aspiring actress and a jazz pianist trying to build careers in Los Angeles.
Production
Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment released La La Land in December 2016. Damien Chazelle had developed the screenplay for years before Whiplash made it feasible. Justin Hurwitz composed the score, and Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone played the leads Sebastian and Mia.
Story
Mia, a struggling actress working as a barista on the Warner Bros. lot, meets Sebastian, a jazz pianist who dreams of opening his own club. Their romance unfolds across four seasons in Los Angeles, balancing artistic ambition against the choices that careers force on partners.
Reception
La La Land received fourteen Academy Award nominations, tying the record set by Titanic and All About Eve, and won six including Best Director and Best Actress. The film was briefly and famously announced as Best Picture before the award was corrected to Moonlight.
