Production
Steven Spielberg directed from a Lawrence Kasdan screenplay developed with George Lucas. Harrison Ford played the archaeologist Indiana Jones, with location shooting in Tunisia, Hawaii, and the United Kingdom. The film came in on an $18 million budget for Paramount.
Reception
The film opened in June 1981, earned around $389 million on initial release, and won four Academy Awards from eight nominations. Time magazine put Ford in his costume on the cover.
Legacy
Raiders launched a four-film franchise that ran into the 2020s and reinvented the matinee adventure serial for the blockbuster era. The character has been ranked the second-greatest hero in American cinema by the American Film Institute.
