Bohemian Rhapsody

Filter:

A 1975 progressive rock epic by Queen, written by Freddie Mercury, fusing ballad, opera, and hard rock sections in a six-minute single.

Composition

Bohemian Rhapsody was written by Freddie Mercury for Queen’s 1975 album “A Night at the Opera.” It moves through six distinct sections, an a cappella intro, ballad, guitar solo, operatic passage, hard rock segment, and reflective outro, with no chorus or repeated motif.

Reception

The song reached number one in the UK on its initial release and again in 1991 after Mercury’s death, making it the only single to top the chart in two separate runs. It later topped charts worldwide again following the 2018 biographical film of the same name.

Legacy

Often cited as one of the most ambitious and unconventional singles ever to top a pop chart, Bohemian Rhapsody helped establish the music video as a promotional medium. The 1975 promo clip was one of the earliest of its kind.
