A Day in the Life

Filter:

A 1967 Beatles song closing "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," combining two unfinished pieces by Lennon and McCartney with a 40-piece orchestral crescendo.

Composition

A Day in the Life joins a contemplative John Lennon section, drawn partly from newspaper stories, with a brisk Paul McCartney middle passage about a daily commute. The two parts are linked by two ascending orchestral crescendos played by a 40-piece ensemble.

Recording

The song was recorded over multiple sessions at EMI Studios in early 1967. Producer George Martin and the band invited the orchestral musicians to wear formal dress, and the final E-major chord was sustained by three pianos played simultaneously for over forty seconds.

Reception

A Day in the Life closes the “Sgt. Pepper” album and is frequently discussed as a turning point in studio production. The BBC initially banned the track in the United Kingdom due to perceived drug references.
