Composition

All Along the Watchtower was written by Bob Dylan and released on his “John Wesley Harding” album in December 1967. The song features only three chords and three short verses, with imagery drawing on the Book of Isaiah.

Hendrix Version

Jimi Hendrix recorded his version in early 1968, expanding the song with extended guitar work and a stormy, layered arrangement. Released on “Electric Ladyland,” it became Hendrix’s only top-40 single in the United States.

Legacy

Dylan has performed the Hendrix arrangement of the song in nearly all his concerts since 1974. The track has been covered by hundreds of artists across rock, folk, and reggae traditions.
