Born to Run

Filter:

A 1975 Bruce Springsteen single layered with dense Phil Spector-influenced production, depicting young lovers planning to escape a dead-end town.

Composition

Bruce Springsteen worked on Born to Run for several months in 1974, layering guitars, glockenspiel, and saxophone behind his narrative of restless young characters. The recording sought a wall-of-sound density influenced by Phil Spector productions.

Recording

The track was recorded primarily at 914 Sound Studios in New York with the E Street Band. The horn part was played by Clarence Clemons, and the song reached its released form only after dozens of takes and mixes.

Reception

The single reached the U.S. top forty, and the album of the same name brought Springsteen to the covers of both Time and Newsweek the same week in October 1975. Born to Run was later named the official rock song of the state of New Jersey.
