Canadian-American actor who led action-adventure films in the late 1990s and 2000s and won an Academy Award for The Whale.
Background
Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Canadian parents, Fraser grew up in Canada, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United States. He trained at the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle.
Career
He broke through in “Encino Man” and “School Ties,” then anchored the Stephen Sommers “Mummy” trilogy as Rick O’Connell. After a long period of reduced visibility he returned with Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale,” winning the Academy Award for Best Actor. He has joined Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and other prestige titles.
Style
Fraser balances physical-comedy heroes with quiet, emotionally exposed dramatic work and is known for sincerity rather than ironic distance.
