Background

Born Burton Stephen Lancaster in East Harlem, New York, he worked as a circus acrobat with the Cole Brothers Circus before army service and a screen debut at 32 in “The Killers” (1946).

Career

He co-founded Hecht-Hill-Lancaster, one of the first major independent production companies, which made “Marty” and “Sweet Smell of Success.” Lancaster received four Best Actor Oscar nominations, winning for “Elmer Gantry,” and worked internationally with Luchino Visconti, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Louis Malle.

Style

He combined an athletic physical presence with later-career willingness to play vain, broken, or self-deluded men, making him one of the era’s most adventurous stars.
