Background

Born Lee Jun-fan in San Francisco’s Chinatown to Cantonese opera star Lee Hoi-chuen, he grew up in Hong Kong before returning to the United States in 1959 to study philosophy at the University of Washington.

Career

He played Kato in the ABC series “The Green Hornet,” then signed with Golden Harvest in Hong Kong, leading “The Big Boss,” “Fist of Fury,” and his self-directed “Way of the Dragon.” Warner Bros. and Golden Harvest co-produced “Enter the Dragon,” released a month after his sudden death at age 32.

Style

Lee founded the martial art Jeet Kune Do, and his films introduced a fast, naturalistic fighting style and a charismatic on-screen persona that defined the global martial arts film boom of the 1970s.
