Born James David Graham Niven in London, England, he was educated at Stowe School and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, before resigning his commission and traveling to Hollywood.
Career
Goldwyn signed him in 1935, and Niven worked steadily through the late 1930s before returning to the United Kingdom for active service during the Second World War. Post-war he led “A Matter of Life and Death,” “Separate Tables,” and “Around the World in 80 Days.” He played Sir Charles Lytton in the original “Pink Panther.”
Style
Niven projected polished British wit on screen and brought a similar tone to two best-selling memoirs, “The Moon’s a Balloon” and “Bring On the Empty Horses.”
