Born James Maitland Stewart in Indiana, Pennsylvania, he studied architecture at Princeton University before performing on Broadway and moving to Hollywood.

Career

He starred for Frank Capra in “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” and for Alfred Hitchcock in “Rope,” “Rear Window,” “The Man Who Knew Too Much,” and “Vertigo.” He served as a bomber pilot in the United States Army Air Forces during the Second World War and the United States Air Force Reserve, retiring as a brigadier general.
