Background
Born Li Lianjie in Beijing, China, he won the Chinese national wushu championship five times as a teenager before being cast in “The Shaolin Temple” in 1982.
Career
He starred in the “Once Upon a Time in China” series as Wong Fei-hung, made his Hollywood debut in “Lethal Weapon 4,” and led “Romeo Must Die” and “Unleashed.” Zhang Yimou cast him in “Hero.” He joined “The Expendables” ensemble and appeared as the Emperor in the 2020 live-action “Mulan.”
Style
Li combined wushu precision with cinematic choreography and is closely identified with mainland Chinese and Hong Kong martial arts traditions on the international stage.
