He became a leading face of Italian commedia all’italiana through “Il federale,” “A Difficult Life,” and “The Birds, the Bees and the Italians,” and worked with Marco Ferreri on “La grande bouffe” and “The Audience.” Bernardo Bertolucci cast him as Primo Spaggiari in “The Tragedy of a Ridiculous Man,” winning the Cannes Best Actor prize. He played Renato Baldi in “La Cage aux Folles” and its sequels.
