Background

Born Lew Alcindor in New York City, he won three consecutive NCAA championships at UCLA under coach John Wooden before being drafted first overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1969.

Career

He won his first NBA title with Milwaukee in 1971 before joining the Los Angeles Lakers in 1975, where he won five more championships during the Showtime era alongside Magic Johnson. He retired in 1989 with 38,387 points.

Style of play

A 7’2” center, Abdul-Jabbar was famous for the “skyhook,” a high-arcing hook shot that was nearly impossible to block. He combined low-post scoring with elite shot-blocking.
