Background
Born in Sildi, Dagestan, Russia, Nurmagomedov began training in wrestling, judo, and combat sambo as a child under his father Abdulmanap.
Career
He joined the UFC in 2012 and won the vacant lightweight title in 2018 by defeating Al Iaquinta. He defended the belt three times, including against Conor McGregor in 2018 and Justin Gaethje in 2020, before retiring after his father’s death.
