A full-contact combat sport combining striking and grappling from boxing, wrestling, Muay Thai, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
Origin and rules
Modern mixed martial arts grew out of vale tudo contests in Brazil and the early Ultimate Fighting Championship in the United States in the 1990s. Fighters use techniques from multiple disciplines in a caged or roped enclosure.
How it plays
Standard bouts run three five-minute rounds; championship and main-event bouts go five rounds. Fighters can punch, kick, knee, elbow, takedown, and submit opponents. Bouts end by knockout, submission, judges’ decision, or referee stoppage.
Competition
The Ultimate Fighting Championship is the leading global promotion, followed by ONE Championship in Asia, the Professional Fighters League, and Bellator. The IMMAF leads efforts toward an amateur world championship structure.
