A Thai striking martial art known as the "art of eight limbs" for its use of fists, elbows, knees, and shins.
Origin and rules
Muay Thai evolved from older Thai battlefield martial arts and was codified as a sport during the early 20th century. Fighters use punches, elbows, knees, kicks, and clinch work in a roped ring.
How it plays
Professional bouts run five three-minute rounds with two-minute breaks. Fighters score with clean strikes, balance, and effective clinch work. Judging emphasises later rounds, rewarding fighters who finish strongly.
Competition
The Lumpinee and Rajadamnern stadiums in Bangkok are historic homes of professional Muay Thai. ONE Championship has elevated the sport globally. The IFMA World Championships and the World Games include Muay Thai, which gained provisional Olympic recognition.
