The top class of motorcycle road racing, contested by purpose-built prototype bikes on grand prix circuits worldwide.
Origin and rules
The FIM Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix was launched in 1949, the oldest motorsport world championship. The premier class became MotoGP in 2002 when 990 cc four-stroke prototypes replaced the two-stroke 500 cc class.
How it plays
A grand prix weekend includes practice, qualifying, sprint races, and a Sunday grand prix of around 110 kilometres. Riders compete in MotoGP, Moto2, and Moto3 classes. Points are awarded to the top fifteen finishers in each race.
Competition
The series visits around twenty circuits each year across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Mugello, Phillip Island, Assen, and Jerez are iconic venues. Italian and Spanish riders have dominated recent eras, with Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez as standout names.
