A motorcycle racing discipline contested on closed off-road circuits with jumps, ruts, and natural obstacles.
Origin and rules
Motocross evolved from British scrambles in the 1920s, with the first international race held in 1947. Riders race off-road motorcycles around a closed dirt circuit featuring jumps, berms, whoops, and natural elevation.
How it plays
A grand prix consists of two heats of around 30 minutes plus two laps. Riders start on a metal gate that drops simultaneously. Points are awarded for each heat, and the rider with the lowest score across the round wins the overall.
Competition
The FIM Motocross World Championship runs across Europe, the Americas, and Asia. The AMA Supercross and Pro Motocross series headline American racing. Italian, Belgian, French, and American riders have produced many world champions.
