Ukrainian pole vaulter who won six consecutive World Championships and set 35 world records.
Background
Born in Luhansk, Soviet Union (now Ukraine), Bubka began pole vaulting as a child and competed for the Soviet Union before Ukrainian independence.
Career
He won the inaugural World Championships in 1983 at age 19 and successfully defended the title five times. He cleared the 6-metre barrier in 1985 and broke world records 35 times, partly because Soviet authorities and bonus structures rewarded incremental improvements.
Style of play
Bubka pioneered the use of a longer pole and a higher grip on the pole, generating greater energy at takeoff. His upper-body strength on the pole became a benchmark for the discipline.
