A short, flat muscle of the hip that rotates the thigh outward and helps stabilize the hip joint.
Structure
The muscle arises from the lateral border of the ischial tuberosity and inserts onto the quadrate tubercle on the intertrochanteric crest of the femur. It lies just inferior to the gemelli and obturator internus.
Function
Along with several other deep hip rotators, it turns the thigh laterally and gives static support to the hip socket during single-leg stance.
Innervation
The nerve to quadratus femoris, a branch of the sacral plexus, supplies the muscle.
