A four-sided anatomical gap in the shoulder region that allows passage of the axillary nerve and posterior circumflex humeral artery.
Structure
The space is bordered superiorly by the teres minor, inferiorly by the teres major, medially by the long head of the triceps brachii, and laterally by the surgical neck of the humerus.
Function
The axillary nerve passes through to supply the deltoid and teres minor, while the posterior circumflex humeral artery accompanies it.
Clinical note
Quadrangular space syndrome occurs when the axillary nerve is compressed here, causing pain and deltoid weakness, often in throwing athletes.
