Dimension Films released Below in October 2002. Lucas Sussman, Darren Aronofsky, and David Twohy wrote the screenplay. David Twohy directed an ensemble led by Bruce Greenwood, Olivia Williams, Holt McCallany, and Scott Foley aboard the fictional USS Tiger Shark in the North Atlantic.
Story
In August 1943, the submarine USS Tiger Shark recovers three survivors from a torpedoed British hospital ship. As Lieutenant Brice settles them aboard, the crew experience strange sounds, malfunctioning equipment, and reflections that hint at something concealed in the boat’s recent history.
Reception
Below received a limited theatrical release and underperformed commercially, but it gained a strong reputation among horror fans on home video. The film is frequently cited as one of the most effective claustrophobic submarine thrillers of the early 2000s.
