A 2011 American neo-noir crime film directed by Nicolas Winding Refn about a Hollywood stunt driver who moonlights as a getaway driver and is drawn into a violent heist gone wrong.

Production

FilmDistrict released Drive in September 2011 after the film won the Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Hossein Amini adapted James Sallis’s novel of the same name. Ryan Gosling played the unnamed Driver, with Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, and Albert Brooks in support.

Story

A Los Angeles stunt driver and mechanic takes a side job as a wheelman for armed robberies. He grows attached to his neighbor Irene and her young son, and after a botched warehouse heist organized by Irene’s recently paroled husband, he must protect them from a mob.

Reception

Drive earned strong reviews and grossed about 81 million dollars worldwide. The film’s synth-driven soundtrack, including songs by College, Kavinsky, and Cliff Martinez, became influential in revival electronic music and the eventual synthwave genre.
