A 2017 war film written and directed by Christopher Nolan dramatizing the May and June 1940 evacuation of British and Allied troops from the French coast.
Production
Warner Bros. released Dunkirk in July 2017. Christopher Nolan shot the film on 65mm IMAX and large-format film with minimal dialogue and a deliberately spare narrative structure. Hans Zimmer composed a score built around a ticking watch sample from Nolan’s own wristwatch.
Story
Three parallel narratives unfold at different time scales. On the mole, soldiers wait a week for evacuation. At sea, civilian boat owners cross the Channel over a single day. In the air, three Spitfires patrol for an hour. The three threads converge on the evacuation’s final day.
Reception
Dunkirk grossed over 530 million dollars worldwide and received eight Academy Award nominations, winning three. It was widely praised as an experiential war film that emphasized survival and sound design over conventional combat heroics and traditional character development.
