Production
Warner Bros. released Gravity in October 2013. Alfonso Cuaron co-wrote the screenplay with his son Jonas Cuaron. Emmanuel Lubezki served as cinematographer. The production team built a custom LED light box, nicknamed the Light Box, to simulate weightlessness and complex orbital lighting.
Story
Mission specialist Dr. Ryan Stone and veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski are servicing the Hubble Space Telescope when a destroyed Russian satellite sends a cloud of debris through their orbit. Cut off from Earth, the survivors attempt to reach the International Space Station and a stranded Soyuz capsule.
Reception
Gravity received ten Academy Award nominations and won seven, including Best Director and Best Cinematography. The film grossed over 723 million dollars worldwide and was widely praised for its long takes, sound design, and use of digital and stereoscopic technology.
