Warner Bros. and DC Films released Joker in October 2019. Todd Phillips co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver as a standalone origin story for the Batman villain, drawing on Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy. Joaquin Phoenix starred as Arthur Fleck.
Story
In a decaying Gotham City of the early 1980s, Arthur Fleck works as a clown-for-hire and cares for his ailing mother in a rundown apartment. After being mugged on the subway, losing access to his medication, and discovering disturbing family secrets, Fleck transforms into the Joker.
Reception
Joker grossed over one billion dollars worldwide, becoming the first R-rated film to do so. It received eleven Academy Award nominations and won two, including Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Original Score for Hildur Gudnadottir.
