A 1979 Australian dystopian action film directed by George Miller about a near-future Highway Patrol officer who turns vigilante after a violent biker gang murders his family.
Production
Roadshow Film Distributors released Mad Max in April 1979. George Miller co-wrote the screenplay with Byron Kennedy from a story by Miller. The film was shot in Victoria, Australia, on a budget of roughly 350,000 Australian dollars, much of it raised by Miller and Kennedy from medical and television work.
Story
In a near-future Australia of crumbling infrastructure and fuel scarcity, Main Force Patrol officer Max Rockatansky confronts a biker gang led by the unhinged Toecutter. After the bikers kill Max’s wife Jessie and infant son Sprog on a coastal road, Max steals a black Pursuit Special and embarks on personal revenge.
Story
Mad Max was for years the most profitable film ever made in terms of return on investment, earning over 100 million dollars worldwide on its small budget. It launched the long-running Mad Max franchise and the international career of Mel Gibson, then a 22-year-old NIDA-trained actor.
