Oldboy

Filter:

A 2003 South Korean neo-noir mystery thriller directed by Park Chan-wook about a man imprisoned in a hotel room for fifteen years who, after his release, has only days to find his captor.

Production

Show East released Oldboy in November 2003. Park Chan-wook adapted a Japanese manga of the same name by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi. Choi Min-sik starred as the imprisoned protagonist Oh Dae-su, and the screenplay diverged sharply from its source material.

Story

Drunken businessman Oh Dae-su is abducted off the street and held in a small room for fifteen years without explanation. After his sudden release, he has five days to discover who imprisoned him and why, while gathering allies and pursuing a trail of clues across Seoul.

Reception

Oldboy won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival under jury president Quentin Tarantino. It is regarded as a landmark of the South Korean cinema renaissance and the central film of Park’s Vengeance Trilogy, alongside Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Lady Vengeance.
