Production
Universal Pictures released Oppenheimer in July 2023. Christopher Nolan adapted Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s biography American Prometheus. The film was shot in IMAX 65mm using both color and black-and-white film stock. Cillian Murphy played Oppenheimer.
Story
The narrative interleaves Oppenheimer’s rise through theoretical physics, his recruitment and direction of the Los Alamos laboratory during the Second World War, the Trinity test in 1945, and the 1954 security hearing that revoked his clearance during the Cold War.
Reception
Oppenheimer grossed over 974 million dollars worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing biographical film ever released. It received thirteen Academy Award nominations and won seven, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr.
