Production

Hollywood Pictures released Quiz Show in September 1994. Paul Attanasio adapted Richard Goodwin’s memoir Remembering America, and Robert Redford directed an ensemble led by Ralph Fiennes, John Turturro, and Rob Morrow as the investigator Goodwin.

Plot

Working-class contestant Herb Stempel is forced to lose to the telegenic Columbia University instructor Charles Van Doren on the NBC quiz Twenty-One. A congressional staffer, Richard Goodwin, investigates and uncovers that producers had been feeding answers to chosen contestants.

Reception

The film received four Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and Best Director. It was widely praised for its restrained, talky tone and for its exploration of integrity, fame, and the early commercial pressures of network television.
